are busy working to improve mobility and sustainability where you live and work. In this issue, we share how they are accomplishing these tasks.
Montclair Township Approves Continued Funding For
Senior Bus Service
In February 2017, EZ Ride took over the township’s senior transportation service. Since then, the door-to-door, reservation-based service has been providing, on average, 700 passenger trips per month. Service is available free of charge for all residents 55 and older, including individuals with disabilities.
The Montclair Township Senior Bus operates five days a week. With our shuttle, you can find something for everyone throughout the week. Trips are provided to access social activities, cultural arts/events, classes, exercise groups, lectures, shopping and doctor appointments.
“I am happy to have extended our contract with EZ Ride because our partnership with them has ensured that the Montclair Senior Bus runs smoothly. And I also know we will receive the data we need to make informed decisions, and I can rely on them to provide us with expert feedback as well.” Said Katie York, Director of Senior Services/Lifelong Montclair.
Many senior members are pleased with the service. “Other than much-appreciated availability of the service itself, the “gem” of the service had been the drivers, reliable, courteous, and always on-time,” said Augusta Ellen Madyun.

Harrison Implements Street Smart Campaign
The Hudson TMA recently joined the Town of Harrison, the Harrison Police Department and the Hudson County Engineering Department to implement NJTPA’s Street Smart Program in the Town. This beneficial program will focus on the heavily-traveled intersection of Frank E. Rodgers Boulevard & Bergen Street.
This collaborative effort is intended to improve vehicular and pedestrian safety along this urban corridor. Through the placement of Street Smart signage while also initiating outreach in the Town of Harrison, it is the hope that drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians will put the principles of the campaign into practice: Heads Up, Phones Down; Walk Smart- We look before crossing; Drive Smart- We stop for people- it’s the law; Walk Smart- We use crosswalks; and Drive Smart- We slow down for safety.
Senior Mobility Program Helps Seniors to Stay Active and Independent in Hunterdon County
goHunterdon helps Hunterdon County senior citizens to stay active and independent through a comprehensive Senior Mobility Program. The free program meets each senior’s needs~whether they are still driving, interested in learning about local transportation options, or looking to stay active by walking or bicycling.
Elements of the program include:
CarFit CarFit is an educational program that promotes continued safe driving and mobility among older drivers by focusing attention on safety and comfort behind the wheel. CarFit is not a driving evaluation. During a 20 minute CarFit session, a goHunterdon technician guides the driver through a “12 Step Checklist” that includes seat position, mirror position to reduce blind spots, seatbelt adjustment, and steering wheel position to ensure driver’s “fit” their vehicle properly for maximum comfort and safety.
“One on One” Transportation Coaching Seniors may schedule individual or small group sessions with goHunterdon staff to learn about available transportation options and how to access these services to meet their travel needs. The coaching ensures that seniors become knowledgeable of service and can feel comfortable using local taxis, Lyft/Uber services, the Hunterdon County LINK Transportation System and other non-emergency medical transportation services. goHunterdon staff will accompany seniors on a first ride, as requested.
Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Walking or bicycling can be great ways for seniors to stay active. But, many seniors are unsure of the best and safest places to walk or ride a bicycle to get to local destinations. goHunterdon staff share tips on how to walk or bicycle safely and will accompany a senior on a designated walk.

New Safe Routes to School Program: The Golden Sneaker Walking Challenge!
The Golden Sneaker Walking Challenge is a pedometer-based student pedestrian contest developed for grades three through five. The program is designed to promote pedestrian safety and the importance of walking as a part of a healthy lifestyle in a fun way.
On October 25, 2019, Zane North Elementary School’s fourth and fifth grade students were selected to embark on an uncharted journey known as The Golden Sneaker Walking Challenge program. For one week, students competed by recording their steps using pedometers provided by Cross County Connection. Students were reminded that a key component of a healthy lifestyle is exercise. Walking daily and recording their steps helped students better understand the time and distance needed to achieve their recommended daily level of physical activity. The program also showed students how physical activity could be enjoyable. The students had a blast and the fifth graders were crowned champions!
As an additional bonus, for participating in The Golden Sneaker Walking Challenge pilot program, Zane North earned 10 points towards their certification from Sustainable Jersey for Schools.

Morristown Improves Pedestrian Safety Through Street Smart Campaign
The Town of Morristown saw improvement in pedestrian safety following the Morristown Bureau of Police’s participation in its third Street Smart pedestrian safety campaign, according to a recent report from TransOptions. Morristown had previously completed Street Smart campaigns in the spring of 2016 and the spring of 2017. The third campaign launched in May 2019.
Street Smart is a statewide public awareness campaign that combines educational outreach and high-visibility law enforcement to change behaviors as they relate to pedestrian safety. The campaign resulted in:
308 enforcement hours dedicated to Street Smart
58 percent reduction in non-compliant midblock crossings
5 percent decrease in drivers failing to stop for pedestrians at the crosswalk
7 percent decrease in turning drivers failing to yield to pedestrians at the crosswalk
9 percent increase in survey respondents’ awareness of police department efforts to enforce pedestrian safety laws
14 percent increase in respondents knowing they should not begin crossing once the pedestrian signal is counting down
23 percent increase in respondents correctly identifying an unmarked crosswalk at an intersection
32 percent increase in respondents reporting being exposed to messages addressing pedestrian safety
46 percent increase in respondents reporting being exposed to “Street Smart” messaging
5 percent decrease in drivers failing to stop for pedestrians at the crosswalk while temporary reflective delineators were applied to the roadway
Between January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2018, there were 73 pedestrians involved in crashes in Morristown, NJ. These crashes include 1 fatal injury, 1 suspected serious injury, 9 suspected minor injuries and 42 possible injuries. That’s according to data from the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety and Rutgers Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT).
RideWise Presents at Somerset County Employer Resource Event
RideWise kicked off the new year early with a presentation on the agency’s programs and services for employers at an Employer Resource and Information Event on January 3. Organized by the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development and the Greater Raritan Workforce Development Board, the event consisted of presentations designed to provide Somerset County employers with valuable resources.
The event brought together a diverse group of organizations and agencies. One employer said of the event, “My expectations were far exceeded with all of the presentations and information! Everyone truly seemed to care about their programs and about helping us, the employers!”
RideWise’s presentation focused on commuter support and sustainable travel options, transportation-related sustainability, safety and workplace wellness programming, and the benefits of New Jersey Smart Workplaces. Other organizations present were Raritan Valley Community College, Greater Raritan One Stop Career Center, Division of Wage & Hour Compliance, the Business Action Center, OSHA, Office of Apprenticeships, Work Opportunity Tax Credit, Federal Bonding, programs for Veterans, and Vocational Rehabilitation.

MY Mobility Plan for Middlesex County Active Adults
KMM recently launched a new program as part of their Silver Safety Series. My Mobility is a hands on program that walks active adults through preparing to stay independent as they get older. Many people make financial plans for retirement, but not everyone makes plans for their mobility and what is needed to allow them to get around.
The program targets three aspects of mobility, MySelf, MyHome, and MyNeighborhood. With assistance from the KMM staff of experts, participants fill out a series of check lists and a tip sheets that help them better access what will be needed and they get older and what steps they can do now to prepare. When they complete the plan, they will have a better plan to stay independent, stay safely in their home and have the ability to stay mobile within their community.
My Mobility is just one of the four programs that makes up the Silver Safety Series. The series provides interactive presentations that deal with driving safety, pedestrian safety, on-demand transportation alternatives and even health and exercise. The programs can be presented individually or as part of a series that includes light refreshments and giveaways.
Available to senior centers, senior housing, and active adult communities across Middlesex County, each program can be customized to your needs. KMM can host one or all of the following programs:

Greater Mercer TMA
Teaming Up for Safety on
Route 129 Trenton
In November 2019, Greater Mercer TMA, NJ Division of Highway Traffic Safety, NJ Department of Transportation, Trenton Police Department, Trenton Planning and Public Works, and other community partners were gathered to conduct a Pedestrian Road Safety Audit along Route 129 in Trenton. The intersections of Rt. 129 at Lalor, Cass and Hamilton were the focus of the audit. Rt. 129 has seen the highest number of fatalities of any roadway in Trenton. Since 2006 there have been 14 fatal crashes on Rt. 129 and nine were pedestrian fatalities. The Lalor Street intersection was the location of five of the pedestrian fatalities.
The audit was conducted with the purpose of identifying ways to increase safety for pedestrians and motorists. Vehicle speed, crossing times, crossing distances, sight lines, and motorist and pedestrian behavior were among the variables observed to inform the audit. GMTMA is collecting all information from the audit and will prepare a report on the findings.
Greater Mercer TMA and Trenton Police Department have also teamed up to conduct a Street Smart NJ campaign, a public education safety campaign coordinated by NJTPA, that emphasizes education as well as enforcement, to raise awareness of pedestrian and motorist laws.
